It was in 1923 that the Presbytery of Dumbarton of the Church of Scotland took steps towards the provision of a church the new housing area of Knightswood: their minutes for 4th December, 1923, contained the following entry: "The matter of a proposed large building scheme by the Corporation of Glasgow affecting the parishes of Temple, Scotstoun and Drumchapel was remitted to the Presbytery's committee on Church Extension for their consideration and report, the ministers interested to be consulted." The same month application was made for a site for a church and hall, and at length the present position, which is surely without rival in the district, was secured. In November, 1924, sanction was given by the Presbytery for the erection of a hall to cost about £3,000, and Mr.J.Jeffrey Waddell was appointed architect. Arrangements were made by which every Congregation in the Presbytery should contribute to the cost of building, so that it is to many that we owe that first great debt. Shortly after the beginning of the following year the work was begun; and it may be interesting to the curious, in view of the cost of such work to-day, to learn what a church hall cost in 1925: Mason, £1,3321; Joiner, £597; Slater, £228; Plumber, £137; Plasterer, £97; Painter, £79; Heating, £73; Lighting, £53; and these, with sundry other items, brought the total cost to £3,074. |
